A white shirt with one broad red stripe: few designs are as simple, or as instantly known, as Ajax’s. Our retro Ajax shirts recreate the classic Ajax kits of the 1950s and the great side of the early 1970s. Each is handcrafted in the UK from 100% cotton.

How the red stripe arrived

Ajax were founded in Amsterdam on 18 March 1900. They first played in black with a red sash, then in red-and-white stripes with black shorts. When Ajax won promotion in 1911, another club already wore those stripes. So Ajax switched to white shorts and a white shirt with a broad red stripe, and kept it ever since. Our Ajax 1950s Retro Football Shirt shows the design in its long-sleeved, button-collar form.

Three in a row

Between 1971 and 1973 Ajax won three straight European Cups, at Wembley, Rotterdam and Belgrade. Johan Cruyff famously wore the number 14. Our Ajax 1970-73 Retro Football Shirt and the Ajax 1970-73 No. 14 Retro Football Shirt celebrate that era, with a short sleeve No. 14 version too.

Why do Ajax wear a broad red stripe?+

After promotion in 1911 Ajax could no longer wear red-and-white stripes, as another club used them. They chose a white shirt with a broad red stripe instead.

Why is the number 14 linked to Ajax?+

Johan Cruyff wore the number 14 for Ajax during the club’s great era of the early 1970s.

Can I add a name and number to my Ajax shirt?+

What sizes do the Ajax shirts come in?+

Adult shirts come in sizes S to 5XL, and we make a kids’ range too. Check the size guide on each shirt for chest measurements.

Can I return my shirt?+

Unpersonalised shirts can be returned within 14 days. Personalised shirts are made to order, so they can’t be returned unless faulty.
