From Woolwich to Highbury

The club began life in 1886 as Dial Square, formed by workers at the Royal Arsenal munitions factory in Woolwich, south-east London, which is where the Gunners nickname comes from. In 1913 the club moved north of the Thames to Highbury, home to some of the most famous sides in the English game for more than ninety years.

Chapman’s white sleeves

In 1933 manager Herbert Chapman added white sleeves to the all-red shirt, creating the look that has defined Arsenal ever since. Our classic Arsenal short sleeve shirt and the long sleeve version carry that red-and-white design, with simple collars and cuffs and no modern sponsor or manufacturer logos.

Anfield, 1989

On the final night of the 1988–89 season, Arsenal needed to win by two clear goals at Anfield to take the title. Michael Thomas scored the second in stoppage time.
