Chapel roots and the Football League

The club was founded in 1874 by members of a Wesleyan chapel cricket club in Aston, Birmingham. Villa director William McGregor was the driving force behind the Football League, and Villa were among its twelve founder members in 1888. They won their first league title in 1893–94 and the League and FA Cup Double in 1896–97.
