A name from ancient Greece

The club was founded in September 1899 by Fred Stoker, who served as its first secretary. He named the team after the Spartan army of ancient Greece, hoping his players would give their all as they went into ‘battle’ on the pitch. The Spartans have played at Croft Park since it opened in 1909.

The cup run of 1977–78

In 1977–78 Blyth came all the way through from the first qualifying round. They beat Chesterfield and Enfield, then won 3–2 away at Stoke City in the fourth round. A 1–1 draw at Wrexham in the fifth round earned a replay, played at St James’ Park in Newcastle in front of 42,167 fans. Blyth lost 2–1, missing out on a home tie with Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
