Black and white stripes and a single star: few Brazilian clubs have a look as distinctive as Botafogo’s. Rowers, footballers and a lone star

Botafogo’s story begins with two clubs. Club de Regatas Botafogo was a rowing club founded in 1894, and Botafogo Football Club followed in 1904. In 1942 they merged to form Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas. The football club’s badge turned black, and the rowing club’s lone star took the place of the old monogram, giving Botafogo its nickname “Estrela Solitária”.

Garrincha and Nilton Santos

Garrincha, the winger with the bent legs and unplayable dribble, made his name in Botafogo’s black and white. Alongside him was Nilton Santos, a two-time world champion with Brazil and one of the finest left-backs of all time. What is the star on Botafogo’s badge?+

The lone star came from the Club de Regatas Botafogo rowing club. When it merged with Botafogo Football Club in 1942, the star replaced the old monogram on the badge.

Why do Botafogo play in black and white?+

Black and white have been Botafogo’s colours since the football club’s early years, which is why the team is known as the Alvinegro Carioca, Rio’s Black and White.
