Retro Bournemouth Shirts

Bournemouth’s red-and-black stripes are among the most distinctive in the English game, but the club’s kit story goes back much further. At TOFFS we recreate retro Bournemouth shirts from across the decades, from the Dean Court sides of the 1950s to the 1970s. Each of our classic Bournemouth kits is handcrafted in the UK from 100% cotton, with no modern sponsor or manufacturer logos.

From Boscombe to Dean Court

The club was founded in the autumn of 1899 as Boscombe FC. In 1910 it was granted land by J.E. Cooper-Dean, and the new ground was named Dean Court after its benefactor. When the club was elected to the Football League in 1923 it became Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic. Why the Cherries?

There are two stories behind the nickname. One points to the cherry-red striped shirts the team once wore. The other points to the Cooper-Dean estate beside the ground, which is thought to have held cherry trees. Either way, red has been at the heart of the kit for most of the club’s history, in stripes, all-red shirts and red with white sleeves.

The Milan stripes of 1971

In 1971 the club became AFC Bournemouth, so that it would appear first in alphabetical lists of English clubs. The same year brought red-and-black striped shirts based on the AC Milan kit, a look the Cherries have kept ever since.
