Claret and amber

Bradford City was formed in 1903, when Manningham FC switched from rugby to football at Valley Parade. Manningham had adopted claret and amber in 1884, the colours of the Prince of Wales’s Own West Yorkshire Regiment, based nearby. Our Bradford City 1903 Retro Football Shirt goes right back to the start.

Cup winners, 1911

Bradford City won the FA Cup in 1911, when captain Jimmy Speirs scored the only goal of the replayed final against Newcastle United. They were the first winners of the new trophy, made by Fattorini of Bradford. The Bradford City 1909-1915 Retro Football Shirt belongs to that golden era.

The Bantams

The Bantams nickname is thought to have caught on during the First World War, when Valley Parade was a recruiting station for battalions of shorter soldiers. From later decades, our Bradford City 1960s Retro Football Shirt and Bradford City 1982-1983 Retro Football Shirt bring the story forward.

Why do Bradford City wear claret and amber?+

The club inherited the colours from Manningham FC in 1903. Manningham had taken them from the Prince of Wales’s Own West Yorkshire Regiment, based nearby on Manningham Lane.

When did Bradford City win the FA Cup?+

In 1911, beating Newcastle United 1–0 in a replayed final with a goal from captain Jimmy Speirs.
