We are the Shakers

Bury were founded in 1885 and have played at Gigg Lane since that first year, making it one of the oldest football grounds in the world. The nickname came from the 1892 Lancashire Cup final, when chairman J. T. Ingham is said to have told his players, “We shall shake ’em! In fact, we are the Shakers.” The newspapers took it up, and it has stayed ever since. White shirts with navy blue shorts are the club’s traditional colours.

Two Cups, no goals conceded

Bury won the FA Cup in 1900, beating Southampton 4–0, and again in 1903 with a 6–0 win over Derby County. That remains the joint-largest winning margin in an FA Cup Final. Our Bury 1903 FA Cup Final Retro Football Shirt celebrates that famous afternoon.

Twice, in 1900 and 1903. They beat Southampton 4–0 and then Derby County 6–0, so they did not concede a goal in either final.

Why are Bury called the Shakers?+

The name comes from the 1892 Lancashire Cup final, when chairman J. T. Ingham is said to have told his players “we are the Shakers”. The press picked it up and it stuck.
