Red and white have been Charlton Athletic’s colours almost from the very beginning. At TOFFS we recreate retro Charlton shirts from The Valley’s great days, including the 1947 FA Cup Final. Red from the drapers

Charlton were founded in June 1905 by a group of teenagers, who picked red and white from a local drapery shop. With one exception they have played in red ever since: for part of 1923–24 they wore blue stripes during a proposed merger with Catford Southend. The Addicks nickname is said to come from a local fishmonger, Arthur Bryan, who treated the team to haddock and chips.

Wembley, 1946 and 1947

Charlton reached two FA Cup Finals in a row after the war. They lost 4–1 to Derby County after extra time in 1946, then came back a year later to beat Burnley 1–0, with Chris Duffy scoring the winner. Our Charlton Athletic 1947 FA Cup Final Retro Football Shirt marks the club’s greatest day.

Home at The Valley

The Valley opened in 1919. Safety concerns forced the club out early in the 1985–86 season, and Charlton finally returned in December 1992. Almost always. The founders chose red and white in 1905, and the only exception was part of the 1923–24 season, when the team wore blue stripes during a proposed merger with Catford Southend.
