The Crooked Spire

The Spireites take their nickname from the town’s famous Crooked Spire, on the Church of St Mary and All Saints. The club’s roots go back to the 19th century, and the current club was formed on 24 April 1919 as Chesterfield Municipal, becoming Chesterfield FC in December 1920. For nearly 140 years football in the town was played at Saltergate, until the move to a new stadium in 2010.

A conservative club in the 1970s

Chesterfield were famously traditional with their kit. When white socks with blue stripes arrived in 1972, they were seen as a radical departure, and an all-white strip tried around that time proved unpopular and was quietly retired. By 1978–79 a new crest featuring the Crooked Spire appeared on Bukta-trimmed shirts. Our Chesterfield 1978-79 Bukta Retro Football Shirt recalls that era, with no modern sponsor or manufacturer logos.

Semi-finalists in 1997

Chesterfield won the Fourth Division in 1969–70 and 1984–85, but the 1997 FA Cup run is the one supporters talk about most. The semi-final against Middlesbrough was drawn 3–3 after extra time, before Chesterfield lost the replay 3–0.
