Cricket club beginnings

Derby County was founded in 1884 as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club, giving the cricketers a winter attraction. In 1888 the club was one of the twelve founder members of the Football League. In 1895 Derby moved to the Baseball Ground, their home for 102 years. The Rams nickname honours the club’s links with the First Regiment of Derby Militia.

Champions of England

Derby’s first major trophy came in 1946, when they beat Charlton Athletic 4–1 in the FA Cup Final. The club’s greatest era followed in the 1970s. Brian Clough’s side won the First Division in 1971–72, and Dave Mackay led Derby to a second title in 1974–75.
