From Dundee Hibernian

The club was founded in 1909 as Dundee Hibernian and played at Tannadice Park from the start, in the Irish colours of green shirts and white shorts. In 1923 it was renamed Dundee United and changed to white shirts and black shorts. Our Dundee United 1962-1969 Retro Football Shirt and Dundee United 1960s Black Retro Football Shirt come from the years before tangerine.

Tangerine arrives

In 1967 United spent a summer in the United States as Dallas Tornado, playing in tangerine. Manager Jerry Kerr, persuaded by his wife, adopted the colour for the club to give it a brighter, more modern image, and United have worn tangerine since August 1969. Our Dundee United 1969-1972 Retro Football Shirt comes from those first tangerine seasons.

Tangerine went on to be worn by the side that won the league in 1983 and reached the 1987 UEFA Cup Final. Why do Dundee United play in tangerine?+

After playing in tangerine as Dallas Tornado in the USA in 1967, manager Jerry Kerr adopted the colour for the club, and United have worn it since August 1969.

What colours did Dundee United wear before tangerine?+

As Dundee Hibernian the club wore green shirts and white shorts. After becoming Dundee United in 1923 they switched to white shirts and black shorts.
