From South Shields to Gateshead

In 1930, with money tight, the South Shields club relocated to nearby Gateshead and was renamed Gateshead Association Football Club. The new club made its home at Redheugh Park and kept its Football League place for three decades.

Claret and blue

As South Shields, the club had worn green and red and then blue and white. On arriving in Gateshead it switched to claret and blue, and kept those colours until 1937, when it changed to plain white shirts with black shorts. Out of the League

After finishing in the bottom four of Division Four in 1959–60, Gateshead had to seek re-election and received fewer votes than Peterborough United, who took their place. The original club folded in 1973, and the town’s football has carried on through the clubs that followed.
