The Tricolor of the south

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense was founded on 15 September 1903 in Porto Alegre, the capital of Brazil’s southernmost state. The home kit of blue and black stripes, black shorts and white socks gave the club its nickname, Tricolor, and fans also call it the Imortal. Champions of the world

Grêmio’s greatest year was 1983. They won the Copa Libertadores, then beat Hamburg 2–1 in the Intercontinental Cup, with Renato scoring both goals. A second Libertadores followed in 1995. The name comes from the club’s three colours: sky blue, black and white, worn as blue and black stripes with white piping.

When did Grêmio become world champions?+

In 1983, when they beat Hamburg 2–1 in the Intercontinental Cup after winning the Copa Libertadores. Renato scored both goals.
