From Pelham to the Mariners

The club was formed in 1878 after a meeting at the Wellington Arms on Freeman Street. It was first called Grimsby Pelham, the family name of the Earl of Yarborough, a major local landowner. The Mariners nickname reflects the town’s links with the sea and fishing, and since 1899 the club has played at Blundell Park in Cleethorpes.

Stripes since 1910

Black and white vertical stripes were adopted in 1910 and, with a few exceptions, have rarely been missing from the kit since. Our Grimsby Town 1940s-1950s Retro Football Shirt and Grimsby Town 1971-1972 Retro Football Shirt come from two different eras, both with no modern sponsor or manufacturer logos.

The 1930s

Grimsby’s best years came in the 1930s. The club finished fifth in the First Division in 1934–35, its highest ever position, and stayed in the top flight until 1939. The Mariners reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1936 and 1939. The 1939 semi-final against Wolves drew 76,962 to Old Trafford, still the ground’s record attendance.
