Hamilton Academical are the only professional club in British football to have grown out of a school team. At TOFFS we recreate retro Hamilton Academical shirts from the 1970s and 1980s, the Douglas Park years. From the school pitch

The club was formed in 1874 by the football team of Hamilton Academy. It chose red and white rather than the school’s colours, as blue was already worn by the older Hamilton FC. From 1888 the Accies played at Douglas Park, reaching Scottish Cup Finals in 1911 and 1935.

Hoops and stripes

Red and white hoops are the Accies’ traditional look, but during the club’s financial struggles of the early 1970s the hoops gave way to vertical stripes. Ibrox, 1987

On 31 January 1987 Hamilton beat Rangers 1–0 at Ibrox in the third round of the Scottish Cup, with Adrian Sprott scoring the goal. It remains one of the club’s most famous results. Why are Hamilton called the Academical?+

The club was formed in 1874 from the school team of Hamilton Academy. It is the only professional club in British football to have come from a school team.

Why did Hamilton wear stripes in the 1970s?+

During the club’s financial difficulties of the early 1970s the traditional red and white hoops were replaced by vertical stripes. The hoops returned after 1975–76.
