Leones Negros are the football club of the University of Guadalajara, and one of the city’s great sporting names alongside Chivas and Atlas. Our retro Leones Negros designs draw on classic Leones Negros kits, with their distinctive vertical stripes of yellow, red and black.

How the Black Lions got their name

The club was founded in 1970. It reached Mexico’s top division in 1974 after acquiring the Torreón franchise and moving it to Guadalajara. At the team’s first match that June, the broadcaster Ángel Fernández called them the Leones Negros, the Black Lions, in reference to the Brazilian players in the side. The name stuck.

Cups and near misses

The Leones Negros finished runners-up in the league in 1975–76, 1976–77 and 1989–90. They shared the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1978 and won the Copa México in 1990–91, playing their home games at the Estadio Jalisco.
