A name from the sea

The club was formed in 1881 by members of the Glyn Cricket Club and began playing football as Orient in 1888. The name was suggested by player Jack Dearing, who worked for the Orient Steam Navigation Company. It became Clapton Orient in 1898, Leyton Orient in 1946, Orient in 1966 and Leyton Orient again in 1987. Brisbane Road has been home since 1937.

The Footballers’ Battalion

During the First World War, 41 Clapton Orient players and staff joined the 17th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment, known as the Footballers’ Battalion. It was the highest number from any club in the country, and three players were killed at the Battle of the Somme.

First Division and FA Cup

Under Johnny Carey, Orient won promotion in 1962 and spent 1962–63 in the First Division, their only season in the top flight. Our Leyton Orient 1962-1963 Retro Football Shirt recreates that year.
