The Silkmen

Macclesfield Town was founded in 1874 and played at Moss Rose from 1891. The nickname comes from the town’s silk industry. Blue and white became the club’s colours in 1947, with one exception: tangerine and black in 1975–76, for sponsorship reasons.

Cup runs and the Trophy

In 1968 Macclesfield reached the FA Cup third round for the first time, losing 4–2 to First Division Fulham at Craven Cottage. Two years later they won the first FA Trophy final, beating Telford United 2–0, and they won the Trophy again in 1996. Our Macclesfield Town 1967 Retro Football Team comes from this era.

League years and a new start

The Silkmen joined the Football League in 1997 and stayed until 2020. The club was wound up that September, and a new club, Macclesfield FC, was formed the following month.
