Amber and black

The original Maidstone United was founded in 1897. Its first home kit was an amber and black striped shirt with white shorts, and between 1922 and 1955 the club wore amber shirts with black shorts. The Stones played at the Athletic Ground on London Road until 1988.

Non-league champions

Maidstone were one of the strongest non-league sides of the 1980s, winning the Alliance Premier League in 1984 and again in 1989, when they were promoted to the Football League. They also won the Kent Senior Cup in 1978–79 and 1979–80. Our Maidstone United 1978-1981 Retro Football Shirt comes from those years, with no modern sponsor or manufacturer logos.

A new beginning

After three seasons in the Fourth Division, playing at Watling Street in Dartford, the original club resigned from the League in financial crisis and folded in August 1992. The new Maidstone United, known as Maidstone Invicta until 1994, filled the gap in the town.
