Malta played their first international on 24 February 1957, losing 3–2 to Austria in a friendly at the Empire Stadium in Gżira. The team has long played in red, and is known at home as the Reds. Our Malta 1960 Retro Football Shirt captures the look of those first seasons.

Famous days

Malta’s best results have often come against much bigger nations. In 1979 they held West Germany to a goalless draw. In March 2008 they recorded their biggest ever win, beating Liechtenstein 7–1 at Ta’ Qali, with Michael Mifsud scoring five goals.
