Mexico’s green shirt is one of the great sights of World Cup football. Our retro Mexico shirts recreate classic Mexico kits from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, each one handcrafted in the UK from 100% cotton with no modern sponsor or manufacturer logos.

From maroon to green

Mexico played their first international in December 1923, beating Guatemala 2–1 in Mexico City. For their early decades they mostly wore maroon. In the 1950s the team adopted the colours of the national flag, with green shirts, white shorts and red socks. That is why they are called El Tri, short for El Tricolor.

World Cup regulars

Hosts in 1970 and 1986

Why are Mexico called El Tri?+

El Tri is short for El Tricolor. Since the 1950s the team has worn the three colours of the national flag, with green shirts, white shorts and red socks.

Did Mexico always play in green?+

No. For their early decades Mexico mostly wore maroon, before switching to the green, white and red of the flag in the 1950s.
