Millwall’s blue and white has Scottish roots. Our retro Millwall shirts recreate classic Millwall kits from the 1940s through to the 1990s, handcrafted in the UK from 100% cotton with no modern sponsor or manufacturer logos.

From the Isle of Dogs

The club was founded in 1885 as Millwall Rovers by workers at J.T. Morton’s canning and preserve factory. Many of the workforce came from Scotland, particularly Dundee, and navy blue was chosen in homage to those roots. The shade changed to royal blue in 1936. The Lions nickname came after a famous FA Cup win over Aston Villa at the turn of the century.

Cold Blow Lane

In 1910 Millwall moved south of the river to The Den at Cold Blow Lane, New Cross. In 1937 the club reached the FA Cup semi-finals. Our Millwall 1940s Home Retro Football Shirt, Millwall 1950-1960 Retro Football Shirt and Millwall 1963 Home Retro Football Shirt all belong to the old Den.

Top flight and a new home

Under John Docherty, Millwall reached the top flight for the first time in 1988 and finished tenth in 1988–89, their best league finish. The New Den opened on 4 August 1993. The Millwall 1993-1994 Retro Football Shirt comes from that first season.

Why do Millwall play in blue and white?+

Many of the factory workers who founded the club in 1885 came from Scotland, and navy blue was chosen in homage to those roots. The club switched to royal blue in 1936.

When did Millwall move to The Den?+

Millwall moved to The Den at Cold Blow Lane, New Cross, in 1910, and to the New Den in 1993.
