Green, yellow and then white

Founded in December 1970 by Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun of Atlantic Records, the Cosmos first played in Brazil’s green and yellow. After Pelé arrived in 1975 they switched to white with green and yellow trim, matching his old club Santos. Pelé and Giants Stadium

Pelé signed on 10 June 1975, Chinaglia arrived from Lazio in 1976 and Beckenbauer followed in 1977. That year the Cosmos moved to Giants Stadium, where a playoff crowd of 77,691 set an American soccer record. Pelé played his last game there on 1 October 1977, a half for each side against Santos. Champions five times

The Cosmos won the NASL in 1972, 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1982. Chinaglia became the club’s record scorer, and our New York Cosmos 1980 White Shirt Chinaglia 9 carries his name. The club folded in 1985, after the league itself had collapsed.

After Pelé joined in 1975, the club changed from green and yellow to white with green and yellow trim, matching his former club Santos.
