The red sash

Peru played their first international in Lima in November 1927, losing 4–0 to Uruguay. The famous red sash was adopted at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. It gives the team one of its nicknames, La Blanquirroja, the White and Red.

Cubillas and the 1970s

Peru won the Copa América in 1939 and 1975. At the 1970 World Cup they reached the quarter-finals and won the first FIFA Fair Play award. In 1978 they beat Scotland 3–1 in their opening match, with Teófilo Cubillas scoring twice, and went on to top their group. Cubillas remains Peru’s top scorer at World Cups.
