Why “the Posh”?

The nickname dates back to 1921, before the club itself was formed. Pat Tirrell, manager of Fletton United, was reported as saying he was looking for “posh players for a posh new team”, and the name stuck.

Knocking on the League’s door

In the 1950s Peterborough were the outstanding non-league side, winning the Midland League five years running from 1956 to 1960. Our Peterborough United 1950s Football Retro Shirt comes from that era. The club was finally elected to the Football League for the 1960–61 season.

A record first season

Posh won the Fourth Division at the first attempt in 1960–61, scoring 134 league goals, a Football League record that still stands. Terry Bly scored 52 of them, an all-time Fourth Division record.
