Argyle and the Pilgrims

The club began as Argyle FC in 1886 and became Plymouth Argyle on turning professional in 1903. Nobody is quite sure where the Argyle name came from: one theory points to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, another to a local tavern or terrace. The Pilgrims nickname honours the Pilgrim Fathers, who sailed from Plymouth in 1620.

Green, and sometimes white

Argyle have mostly played in green and white, although white was the first choice for a spell in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
