Club Universidad Nacional, better known as Pumas UNAM, is the football club of Mexico’s National Autonomous University. Our retro Pumas UNAM designs and nods to classic Pumas UNAM kits celebrate a club known for its blue and gold.

Blue, gold and the puma

The club was founded in 1954 as Club Deportivo Universidad. Its blue and gold were chosen as a tribute to Notre Dame, whose American football coaches had helped set up the university’s programme. The Pumas name came from coach Roberto “Tapatío” Méndez, whose team talks compared his players to the big cats.

The Olympic stadium

Pumas play at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, the main venue of the 1968 Summer Olympics. They became league champions for the first time in 1976–77. Hugo Sánchez began his career with the club, and later returned as coach to win league titles in 2004.
