A name from the docks

River Plate was founded on 25 May 1901 in Buenos Aires. The name comes from the English name for the estuary on which the city stands: founder Pedro Martínez saw “The River Plate” written on containers at the docks and proposed it for the club. The club is also known as La Banda, after the sash, and El Más Grande.

La Banda Roja

The red sash is at the heart of the club’s identity. In March 1932 club president Antonio Liberti reissued it to the players, telling them to take care of it because it was the River Plate shirt. The Estadio Monumental opened on 25 May 1938, and between 1941 and 1946 River’s forward line played with such understanding that it became known as La Máquina, the Machine.

Why do River Plate wear a red sash?+

The diagonal red band, La Banda Roja, has long been the club’s trademark. In 1932 president Antonio Liberti reissued it, telling the players it was the River Plate shirt.
