Red-and-white stripes and Bramall Lane go back well over a century. At TOFFS we recreate retro Sheffield United shirts from the 1920s to the late 1970s, including two FA Cup Finals. The Cutlers become the Blades

Sheffield United were founded on 22 March 1889 and have always played at Bramall Lane, which hosted its first game in 1862. The club started in white shirts and blue shorts, tried narrow red stripes in 1890–91 and brought the stripes back in 1892–93. Black shorts replaced blue in 1904. The first nickname was the Cutlers, but by 1912 the Blades, another nod to the city’s cutlery trade, had taken over.

Cup winners

United were league champions in 1897–98 and won the FA Cup in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925. In the 1925 final Fred Tunstall scored the only goal against Cardiff City. When did Sheffield United start wearing red and white stripes?+

The club tried narrow red stripes in 1890–91 and brought stripes back in 1892–93. Black shorts replaced the original blue in 1904.

Why are Sheffield United called the Blades?+

The name reflects Sheffield’s cutlery trade. The club was first known as the Cutlers, and the Blades had taken over by 1912.
