Gay Meadow

Shrewsbury Town were founded in 1886 and moved to Gay Meadow, on the banks of the River Severn, in 1910. The club joined the Football League in 1950. During home games coracle maker Fred Davies sat in his little boat on the river, ready to fetch any ball that cleared the stand.

The 1960s and 1970s

Early Shrewsbury kits included blue and white stripes and quartered shirts. Our range from these decades includes the Shrewsbury Town 1960s Retro Football Shirt, the Shrewsbury Town 1965-1968 Retro Football Shirt and the Shrewsbury Town 1970-1977 Retro Football Shirt.

Blue and amber

The club’s most famous design, blue and amber stripes, arrived in 1978. Graham Turner’s side won the Third Division title the following season, clinching promotion with a 4–1 win over Exeter City. Our Shrewsbury Town 1980-1981 Retro Football Shirt comes from the club’s early Second Division years.

The blue and amber striped design arrived in 1978 and was worn during the club’s rise to the Second Division. Blue with amber has been the look again since 1999.

Who was the Gay Meadow coracle man?+

Fred Davies, a coracle maker who sat in his small boat on the River Severn during home games and fetched balls kicked out of Gay Meadow.
