Haig Avenue and the League

At the start of the 1905–06 season the club moved to Haig Avenue, then known as Ash Lane, still its home today. In 1921 Southport joined the Football League as founder members of the Third Division North. Ten years later they became the first club from that division to reach the FA Cup sixth round, where they lost to Everton.

Gold, black and a touch of blue

Old gold and black were adopted in 1954, having previously been the change strip. In 1970–71 a small blue monogram appeared on the plain old gold shirts, and blue collars and shorts followed the next season. By the club’s final League season in 1978, Southport were wearing yellow shirts with an SFC badge.

Southport won the Fourth Division title in 1972–73. After three seasons finishing 23rd, they were voted out of the Football League in 1978 and replaced by Wigan Athletic. Our Southport 1976-1977 Bukta Retro Football Shirt comes from those last League years, with no modern sponsor or manufacturer logos.
