From the Magpies to the Gulls

The club was founded in 1899 by a group of school-leavers. After merging with Ellacombe in 1910 and Babbacombe in 1921, it took the Torquay United name and turned professional. For years the team wore black and white stripes and were known as the Magpies. In 1954 they changed to gold and blue, and became the Gulls.

Plainmoor

Plainmoor has been home since 1921, and Torquay entered the Football League in 1927. In 1954–55 the ground drew its record crowd of 21,908 for an FA Cup tie with Huddersfield Town. Our Torquay United 1960 Retro Football Shirt and Torquay United 1968-70 come from the decade that followed.

Why do Torquay United play in yellow and blue?+

In 1954 the club dropped its black and white stripes for gold and blue, chosen to reflect the area’s golden sands and blue sky and sea.

Why are Torquay United called the Gulls?+

The nickname came with the change to gold and blue in 1954. Before that, in black and white stripes, the team were known as the Magpies.
