From Belmont to Prenton Park

The club was founded in 1884 as Belmont Football Club and adopted the name Tranmere Rovers on 16 September 1885. Prenton Park has been home since 1912. In 1924 a 16-year-old local prospect, Dixie Dean, joined Rovers and scored 27 goals in 30 appearances before his move to Everton.

The Super White Army

For many years Tranmere wore blue shirts with white shorts. In 1962 manager Dave Russell switched the team to an all-white strip, saying the club should have an identity of its own. The change gave rise to the nickname the Super White Army, later the Superwhites. Our Tranmere Rovers 1970s Retro Football Shirt comes from the decade that followed.

Wembley and beyond

In 2000 Tranmere reached the League Cup final, the first time the club had reached the final of one of England’s two major cups. They lost 2–1 to Leicester City at the old Wembley Stadium.
