Walsall’s nickname comes from the town’s saddle-making trade, and the club’s shirts have moved between red and white over the decades. Town and Swifts

Walsall were formed in 1888 as Walsall Town Swifts, when Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts amalgamated. From 1895 the club played at Fellows Park, its home for almost a century, before moving to the Bescot Stadium in 1990. The Saddlers nickname reflects Walsall’s standing as a traditional centre of saddle manufacture.

Arsenal, 1933

In 1933 Walsall beat Arsenal 2–0 at home in the FA Cup, with Gilbert Alsop among the scorers. Arsenal were the leading team in England at the time, and the result is remembered as one of the great FA Cup upsets.

Red, white and red again

After the Second World War Walsall wore red shirts, then from 1957 turned to white shirts with red shorts. Red shirts returned in 1977. Our Walsall 1960 Retro Football Shirt comes from the season the club won the Fourth Division title, 1959–60.
