Miners in Turin

In 1909 an amateur side from County Durham, made up mostly of coal miners, travelled to Turin for the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy, one of the earliest international club competitions and often called the first World Cup. Why this team was chosen remains unclear. West Auckland beat Sportfreunde Stuttgart 2–0 in the semi-finals, then FC Winterthur 2–0 in the final on 12 April 1909.

Champions again in 1911

West Auckland returned to Italy in 1911 to defend their title. They beat FC Zürich 2–0 in the semi-finals and Juventus 6–1 in the final, and were awarded the trophy to keep. In January 1994 the original was stolen from the West Auckland Working Men’s Club and never recovered. The club now holds an exact replica.
