The Minstermen

York City were founded in 1922 and moved to Bootham Crescent in 1932, their home for 88 years until the move to the York Community Stadium in 2021. The Minstermen nickname comes from York Minster. Before it was adopted the team were known as the Robins, after their red shirts.

Chocolate, cream and red

The club first wore maroon and white, then chocolate and cream stripes from 1933, before switching to red shirts in 1937. After a spell in white in the late 1960s, York went back to maroon shirts with white shorts in 1969.

The 1950s and 1970s

In 1954–55 the ‘Happy Wanderers’ reached the FA Cup semi-finals, drawing 1–1 with Newcastle United before losing the replay 2–0 at Roker Park. In 1973–74 York won promotion to the Second Division for the first time.
