Amber and black are the colours of Newport County, worn at Somerton Park and now at Rodney Parade. At TOFFS we recreate retro Newport County shirts from the late 1950s and 1960s. The Ironsides

The club was founded in 1912 and spent most of its history at Somerton Park. Its first nickname, the Ironsides, came from Newport’s steel industry, including Lysaght’s Orb Works. Our Newport County 1959-1963 Retro Football Shirt and Newport County 1963-1968 Retro Football Shirt come from the Somerton Park years.

Into Europe

Newport won the Welsh Cup in 1980 and reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup the following season. They beat Crusaders and SK Haugar before going out to Carl Zeiss Jena of East Germany.

The Exiles

The original club went out of business in February 1989. Supporters re-formed it that June as Newport AFC, and because it could not at first play at home in the town, the side became known as the Exiles. The Newport County name returned in 1999, and the club won promotion back to the Football League in 2013. For casual wear there’s the Newport County Amber/Black T-Shirt. After the original club folded in 1989, the re-formed side could not at first play its home games in Newport, and the Exiles nickname stuck.

Why were Newport County once called the Ironsides?+

The earlier nickname came from Newport’s steel industry, including Lysaght’s Orb Works in the town.
