The 'final' of the 1950 World Cup if there was one was what all finals should have. A massive crowd; wonderful football, intrigue and suspense. Even today the victory by the Celestes (sky blues) over Brazil ranks as one of the great upsets in football; a ceremonial talk by the Governor of Rio celebrating the Brazilian victory before the game upsetting the Uruguayan contingent to the degree that when Brazil did score the Uruguayan captain, Obdulio Varela, strode manfully and ruefully to George Reader, the referee, argued pointlessly about the goal and still the crowd before announcing to his team mates 'Now it's time to win!' And win they did; the defeat silencing the quarter of a million massed in the Maracana.
